Windows Communication Foundation, or just WCF, is a programming framework used to build applications that inter-communicate. WCF is the part of the .NET Framework dedicated to communications.

Originally tagged with the code name "Indigo", WCF is one of the four new application programming interfaces introduced with .NET Framework 3.0, which was released in December 2006. The .NET Framework is Microsoft technology that ships in Windows operating systems (client, server and mobile platforms). The .NET Framework v3.0 is included in Windows Vista and Windows Server 2008; It is available as a free download for Windows XP and Windows Server 2003, and a similar but separate version is also available for .NET Compact Framework version 3.5.

Because WCF is part of the .NET Framework, applications that use WCF can be developed in any programming language that can target the .NET runtime.

What I believe that, now CPU speed has come to certain limitation from single CPU, but days are coming with multiple CPU.
That means we need to optimize our code to use multiple CPU by threading (synchronous / asynchronous) or something like that. How .Net 4.0 will cater this practical need, that can be watched

Joining Tables
Instead joining tables using WHERE clause, use INNER JOIN / LEFT OUTER JOIN / RIGHT OUTER JOIN. This will increase the performance.
Retraction Rows and Columns
Restrict the queries result set by using the WHERE clause and select only those columns whose values are required. This will use less memory, processing time will be less and data transmission will be less.
Instead writing complex SQL using the application write Stored Procedures. The SQL will be in pre compiled state. Here for multiple time calls the same SP, the same query execution plan will be reused.
If possible, try to avoid use cursors. This will degrade performance heavily.
If possible, try to avoid use triggers. Maintaining trigger is difficult.
Be careful to use DISTINCT, UNION clauses. If required then only use it.
Be careful to use GROUP BY, HAVING clauses. If grouping is required then only use it.
Keep "SET NOCOUNT ON" statement at the top of the stored procedures, this counts rows returned for each query statement.

The steps occured before Query Optimizer works

After a query is submitted, the following steps are occured to transform the query into a format that the query optimizer can interpret.

Parsing Process
Checks the incoming query for correct syntax and breaks down the syntax into component parts that the relational database engine can respond to. The output of this step is a parsed query tree.

Standardization Process
Transforms a query into a useful format for optimization. Any redundant syntax clauses that are detected are removed. Subqueries are standardized if possible. The output of this step is a standardized query tree.

Query Optimization
The process of selecting one execution plan from several possible plans is called optimization. The following steps have the most significant effect on the cost of the execution plan: query analysis, index selection, and join selection.

Query Analysis
      Identifies the search and join criteria of the query
Index Selection
     Determines whether an index or indexes exist
     Assesses the usefulness of the index or indexes
Join Selection
     Evaluates which join strategy to use

Compilation
The query is compiled into executable code.

Database Access Routines
The query optimizer determines the best method to access data, by performing a table scan, or by using an available index. The better method is then applied.

We have DCOM, CORBA, RMI initially. Then came Web Service. After that all types of issues related to security, addressing, transaction WS-* specification came to picture via 1.0, 2.0 and 3.0 WSE. In the mean time only through .NET client/server based connected system we got remoting. All these different thing implementation procedure wan entirely different. The other issue was for every type of implementation there is some constraint. All the things taken care into here in WCF as single development, hosting platform based on the availability of platform to host it.

This one of the best product from Microsoft.
